Different types of radio stations and Examples of each one

One type of radio is Public Radio. These stations are funded by the fee that the general public pay and funding from the government. Due to this it means that they can't advertise or explicitly promote products on their stations. They also don't have competitions that offer cash prizes. They have some of the highest listener numbers. An example of this kind of radio station is the BBC Radios such as BBC radio 1.

Another type of radio station is National Commercial radio. These stations contain advertisements and endorsements. Major companies such as global own different stations such as capital and heart. these stations create profit for the company from advertisements and endorsements.

There is also Regional Radio which can be either commercial or public. As the name suggests, these radios cater to a particular region. By doing this they are able to cater the news and advertisements based on their specific area. An example of this is Radio Sheffield.

The next type of radio station is Not for profit Radio which, As suggested by the name, is designed to not make a profit and therefore keeps costs to a minimum. To keep them running they rely on volunteers. These types of stations can mainly be found in places such as hospitals and universities. They tailor their content to the listeners. An example of this is Sheffield hospital radio.

There is also Community Radio which is a form of non profit radio. This is when local people create and produce their own programs. They cover a small geographical area, usually around 5km, and reflect a mix of cultures and interests. An example of this is Sheffield Live!.

Finally there is Internet Radio. This type of station uses the internet to distribute its content rather than radio waves like other types of stations. The proper name for internet radio is webcasting. It is different from podcasts since podcasts are pre recorded whereas internet radio is usually provided live.
